Historical epistemology, as it is pursued at the Institute, is to a
large extent dependent on a great variety of sources that represent
different fields of knowledge. The new information technologies offer
a potential for dealing with this abundance that has scarcely been
exploited by traditional scholarship in the humanities. The
newly-founded Information Technology Group aims to make this potential
available to the projects and the individual scholars at the
Institute, adapting existing tools and developing new instruments to
their specific research goals. Its foundation was made possible by an
extraordinary effort of the Max Planck Society.  The work of the group
is lead by a vision of working
environment of the scholar in the humanities, and in particular of the
historian of science, which will differ considerably from the traditional
working place complemented by a desktop computer for text
processing. The future scholars will have direct access to images and
full texts of the sources relevant to their work, together with
powerful searching and retrieval systems. In addition, they will also
have tools like dictionaries and other language tools at their
disposal that make it possible to cross language barriers and to
analyze the content of texts written in their original
language. Furthermore, they can study, or compare these documents, and
make annotations, or compare documents. All of this can be done in a
web-based collaboration within a world-wide community of specialists. 


Historische Epistemologie, wie sie am Institut verfolgt wird, ist in
großem Maße von der Verfügbarkeit einer großen Breite von  Quellen abhängig,
die unterschiedlichste Wissensbereiche repräsentieren. Die neuen
Informationstechnologien bieten das Potential diese Quellen verfügbar
und erschließbar zu machen. Bisher jedoch ist dieses Potential in der
klassichen Foschung in den Geisteswissenschaften kaum genutzt
worden. Die neu gegründete Informationstechnologiegruppe des
Institutes hat zum Zie dieses Potential für die Projekte und
Einzelwissenschaftler des Insitutes nutzbar zu machen, in dem
existierende Hilfsmittel allgemein verfügbar gemacht werden und neuen
angepasste Tools entwickelt werden. Die Gründung der Gruppe wurde
durch einen ausserordenlichen Einsatz der MPG möglich.

Ihre Arbeit ist von der Vision eines zukünftigen Computerarbeitsplatzes
geleitet, der sich in wesentlichen Punkten vom traditionellen
Arbeitsplatz unterscheidet, dei dem der Computer in erster Linie für
Textverarbeitung eingesetzt wird. Der Wissenschaftler der Zukunft
wird an seinem Arbeitsplatz direkten Zugang zu Reproduktionen und
Volltexten der Quellen haben, die er für seine Arbeit benötigt, er
wird z.B. Hilfsmittel wir Lexika oder elektronische Auskunftssystem direkt
zur Verfügung haben, die es ermöglichen Sprachbarieren zu überbrücken
und Texte in Originalsprachen zu analysieren. Er kann Dokumente elektronisch
annotieren und vergleichen. Darüberhinaus können Ergebnisse direkt über das Netz
verbreiten werden und damit als Grundlage für eine weltweite
Kooperation von Experten dienen.
