A hydrogen atom consists of a proton and an orbiting electron. According to Rutherford's measurements of 1911, however, it consists primarily of a void. If the proton were as big as a tennis ball, we would have to look for the electron somewhere behind the Chancellor's office\: its orbit would be about 2.3 kilometres from the proton.
