In 1918, Hermann Weyl formulates his gauge theory, the first attempt to combine the General Theory of Relativity and electrodynamics to form a unified field theory. Einstein admires the formal elegance of this theory but rejects it for reasons of physics. Weyl later applies his ideas to quantum mechanics, creating one of the most important instruments of modern quantum field theory.
