Reading the correspondence between Mandl and Einstein one gets the feeling, that Einstein by finally publishing a note in Science simply wanted to finish the debates.
The article starts with an opening statement, by which he immediately dissociates from his own findings\:
Some time ago, R.W. Mandl paid me a visit and asked me to publish the results of a little calculation which I had made at his request. This note complies with this wish.
