The Scottish engineer Robert Stirling constructed the first hot-air engine in 1816. The piston is moved by the enclosed volume of air that is alternately heated or cooled. The heating occurred through a burner, the cooling with water. Hot-air engines, however, have rarely been practically realized despite their simplicity and efficiency \u2013 due to the closed circulation, there are very high demands on the material and mechanics.
