By the mid-sixteenth century at the latest the retort is introduced into Europe as a universal implement in alchemy. With the help of a \u201Creceiver\u201D it enables the extraction of substances by distillation, sublimation, or gasification achieving far higher quality levels than ever before.
Liquid or solid materials are heated in the retort. The expelled substances precipitate in the cool neck of the retort and are collected in the receiver.
