#92 fixed better PLACE concept casties
Description

The following will illustrate the problem: Let’s say we want to enter a <Place> and <Institution> for a copy event. Now <Place> is getting its list from <Place>, which mainly has modern cities with some countries and a few institutions. Now <Institution> in Create copy event gets its list from <Repository>, but this is not where institutions should be located. Repositories are modern libraries or private collections, i.e. places where codices/manuscripts are currently being held. But <Institutions> should return a list from City/Place?, where type is institution.

This seems to us to point to a larger problem, namely a confusion regarding the concept of place and how to differentiate one place from another. Note that there are two entities currently dealing with place, namely City/Place? and Repository. Furthermore, it’s not clear how one might enter a new country, since it stands already at the highest category within a hierarchical arrangement. (This came up when we tried to enter the Vatican as a country; it’s possible but only by making Vatican City State a City/Place? name with type <region>, all of which seems odd. Note that there is also a City/Place? called simply Vatican City, which is related to Vatican City State.)

We think that PLACE has somehow fallen through the cracks over the years, and we’ve ended up with ad hoc solutions. It seems to us that we should now look at PLACE holistically, in an analogous way in which we handle PERSON. This is what we would suggest:

  1. Have all cities, repositories, institutions, countries be subsumed under a single entity called PLACE.
  2. Allow an attribute to PLACE called TYPE (analogous to ROLE for PERSON).
  3. Here is a preliminary list of types:
    1. Country (modern)
    2. Region (either modern or premodern)
    3. City (modern or premodern)
    4. City District (modern or premodern)
    5. Repository (modern)
    6. Library (premodern)
    7. Madrasa (premodern)
    8. Mosque (premodern)
    9. Observatory (premodern)
  4. As with PERSON, each of these types could have aliases.
