CDLI Scenarios

usecases

  • case A: user wants to see the location of one single object from the CDLI database in GE
  • case B: user wants to see more texts in GE at the same time
  • case C: user has plans and maps that he wants to upload to GE
  • case D: user wants to edit the CDLI location for an object
  • case E: user wants to see original find spot of object and its present location (collection)

further description

  • description of A: in browse mode CDLI search has (1) generic header (2) abbrevited catalog information (3) image of object (4) transliteration of text on object. below (2) is a link to (5) full catalog (for logged in users) (6) link to writing comments about the object in the CDLI wiki. link to Google Maps should be placed somewhere within (2).
  • description of B: user wants to see all of the found texts in a search (in CDLI catalog). link should probably be placed in header (1).
  • description of C: many scholars have plans and maps with information where objects in the CDLI database were found. They can be convinced to upload these to CDLI when there is an environment to do so. User scans his plan, or has already an electronic version of the plan, he must check the format, he uploads and must be able to place it the right location in GE.
  • description of D: the user finds a object in the cdli database and subsequently the cdli location in GE. He/she knows where it was originally found, and wants to change the CDLI coordinates for this object, preferably in Google Earth (or Maps).
  • description of E: all objects in the CDLI database have two sets of GE coordinates. the original find spot and the present location (eventually it could be interesting to include a trail), i.e., the museum or private collection where the tablet is now located.

solutions

  • solution for A: GE coordinates are entered directly into the main CDLI catalog which is dumped every night to a ftp folder in LA and picked up in Berlin and LA to write the web-catalog. Dump should include GE cordinates, import should include GE coordinates.
    • GE coordinates: the index for the field proveniences is used to establish a first list of GE coordinates for the CDLI database. These coordinates are imported directly into the FM database. For those few objects where exact location is known this is intered manually.
  • solution is thus rather straight forward, biggest work-load is assigning GE coordinates to index of CDLI proveniences.
  • solution for B (user wants to see more texts in GE at the same time): user searched in CDLI catalog and gets a list of found objects as result. Possibility to show results on Google Maps or as downloadable kml file. Perhaps better to have option on search page to get search results in GE maps
  • solution for D (user wants to edit a CDLI location for an object):
