Version 1 (modified by Klaus Thoden, 11 years ago) (diff)

The Edition Open Access aims at creating books (e. g. editions of sources also available in ECHO) and publish them in a number of formats, namely PDF, eBook and static HTML. As a basis, Latex is used (Documentation of macro packages).

As of now, there are no workflows for converting XML texts into that Latex format, but that would be highly desirable. Changes and corrections made in the Latex file would have to be (in the worst case) manually transferred to the XML, in order to keep the versions synchronized. As the Latex version is mainly aimed at presentation and layout, a lot of features encoded in the XML would get lost along the way.

Qiqi Tushuo

As a first step, the Yuanxi Qiqi Tushuo Luzui (rather basic archimedes XML) was exported into Latex, using XSLT. The edition is going to be comprised of three parts:

  1. A paraphrase in English of the text (but linked sentence-wise to the Chinese transcription and page-wise to the facsimiles)
  2. The Chinese transcription (linked sentence-wise to the paraphrase and page-wise to the facsimiles)
  3. The facsimiles (linked to the Chinese transcription)

The paraphrase was originally edited in Arboreal and was started as a slave text of the Chinese transcription which is why there are unique identifiers for each sentence. The whole work was done using XSLT, one stylesheet for the paraphrase and one for the transcription, using Matthias Schemmel's version of the text. These files also referenced the Archimedes dtd (to be found elsewhere on this wiki) and a set of images depicting Chinese charaacters and three tables (attached here). The stylesheets as well as other files are also attached to this page.

Manual work

  • deletion of lines in the Latex source which contain nothing but a line break (\\)
