2. Questions From Formax

Q The following books are gothic language books and we need more time to recognize and key them as normal books, we hope that the five books can be cost as complex book, please check & confirm.

  • Ampere_1844
  • Belidor_1745
  • Belidor_1766
  • Cardano_1559
  • Vitruvius_1614

A Thank you for your inquiry. Please, proceed with keying the five works as complex books. Our specifications on Gothic script can be found in the DESpec document chapter 5: "Fraktur".

Q Please see Book Belidor_1745, 0039.jpg, should we also need ignore the horizontal rules and key figures, fractions and operators as they occur?

A Please ignore vertical lines. Please ignore horizontal lines if they do not belong to a fraction; see the example below (page 0081). However, please do type operators and fractions.

Also, contrary to the DESpecs, please use an abbreviated way of marking simple exponents: Instead of the normal

a<^>2</^>

please type

a^2

and so on. Always type a space after the exponent if you use this notation. If you have any questions about this rule, please do not hesitate to ask us. Also, if you need more examples, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Example:

<pb 13>
<p>Endlich wird man leicht $ehen, daß, wann man <rom>a^2 + b^2 - ad -
x^2 multiplici</rom>ret mit <rom>a^2 + bc</rom>, ma@ zum <rom>Product</rom> bekommen wird <rom>a^4 +
a^2 b^2 - a^3 d - a^2 x^2 + a^2 bc + b^3 c - abcd - bc x^2.</rom></p>
<p>Es $eye zu <rom>mult. 2a + b, # a - b, # a + c, # a - b</rom>
mit # <rom>3c. # d # a + c # a - b.
I. Product # 6ac + 3bc. # ad - bd. # aa + ac # aa - ab
II. Product # + ac + cc # - ab + bb
Total-Product. # aa + 2ac + cc. # aa - 2ab + bb.</rom></p>
<p> Es $seye zu <rom>multipl. a^2 + b^2 - ad - x^2.</rom>
mit # <rom>a^2 + bc
...

The # stand for large spaces in the paragraph. Note that large spaces in a paragraph often indicate a table or a table-like structure. If you can identify a table-like structure, please type it as a table instead of a paragraph.

Example:

<pb 13>
<p>Endlich wird man leicht $ehen, daß, wann man <rom>a^2 + b^2 - ad -
x^2 multiplici</rom>ret mit <rom>a^2 + bc</rom>, ma@ zum <rom>Product</rom> bekommen wird <rom>a^4 +
a^2 b^2 - a^3 d - a^2 x^2 + a^2 bc + b^3 c - abcd - bc x^2.</rom></p>
<tb rom>
<fr>Es $eye zu</fr> mult. # 2a + b, # a - b, # a + c, # a - b
<fr>mit</fr> # 3c. # d # a + c # a - b.
I. Product # 6ac + 3bc. # ad - bd. # aa + ac # aa - ab
II. Product # # # + ac + cc # - ab + bb
Total-Product. # aa + 2ac + cc. # aa - 2ab + bb.
</tb>
<tb rom>
<fr>Es $eye zu</fr> multipl. # a^2 + b^2 - ad - x^2.
<fr>mit</fr> # a^2 + bc
...

Q Also please see 0081.jpg, the paragraph in the middle of this page which begin with “Divid.”, there are many horizontal rules, should we need ignore them? Please note, the same situation appears many times in this book.

A Yes, please ignore the lines in the "Divid." paragraph.

However, if you can identify a fraction, please type it as such. For example a few lines above "Divid." on the same page: please type

<rom>x = {a-2b-c / 6}</rom>. Nun

Q Please see Book Belidor_1745, 0058.jpg, how to code the number 4 with strike stroke font which appear at the 2nd line from bottom?

A Please type it as

<del>4</del> <del>8</del>

Q Please see Book Belidor_1745, 0062.jpg, should we need key the fraction data which numbered as A, B, C etc. as second text block data or just put them to the end of the paragraph which near the fraction?

A In Belidor 1745, please type it after the surrounding paragraph, as you have suggested. Type it as a table if it has a table-like structure. Example:

<p> ...
neuen <rom>Quotient</rom>en 3. um das <rom>Product C</rom> zu bekommen.</p>
<tb rom>
A 2529243 ( 463 # 46
...
</tb>

Q Please see your reply on 26.10.10 Book Belidor_1745, in that reply, we need use an abbreviated way of marking simple exponents for the superscript such as a<^>2</^> should be code as a2, but we found in today's reply, the superscript is marked as ^ such as y^4, should we need use today's rule to correct the data for Belidor_1745? Also, should we also need use <math> to code the fractions in Belidor_1745 which separated and coded as a table? If yes, can you give us some samples for how to code the data in 0039.jpg/0081.jpg in Belidor_1745?

A I am sorry about the confusion. Apparently my plain-text email got scrambled on its way from Berlin to Beijing. In my email I wrote "a ^ 2" (without the spaces), and in my system it is displayed correctly. I have checked with my collegue, and in her Email system it is displayed differently, namely as with a superscript-2. Apparently in your system it is displayed as a2. I don't know why it got scrambled in my Belidor-email but was displayed correctly in my Descartes-email. Similarly, _ nnyy _ may have been displayed incorrectly.
