2. Questions From Formax

Q We found in waring-1785, there are many variable with some other variable/ constant such as n-1, n-2, π etc. above, can you give us a rule to how to code it? For example:

A

  • Please mark "n-2" as if it were not above the β, but a superscript to the right of β:
    <math>{β ^. ^n-2 / α}</math>

  • insolventes (_n_) quantitates <math>v, v', v'', ..., v' ^n-1</math> & earum fluxiones primi

Please note: It is not Greek "υ", but Latin "v" in italics. (Recall that it is not necessary to mark the italics in <math>.) However, using v′ (U+2032) instead of v' (U+0027) and v″ (U+2033) instead of v'' (two U+0027) is fine in <math>.

Other examples on the same page:

deduci pote$t <math>{x ^. / x} = {v ^. / v' - v} = {w ^. / w' - w}</math>; deinde ...

insolventes; pro <math>y, y ^. , y ^.. , ..., y ^. ^n-1 & n ^. ^n} $cibantur <math>vx, v' x ^. , { v'' x ^. ^2 / x}, ..., {v' ^n-1 x ^. ^n-1 / x ^n-2}
& {v' ^n x ^. ^n / x ^n-1}</math>; ...

Please note: Contrary to the DESpecs, page 23, do not type "\.x" instead of "x ^." in <math>, even though the dot is above the x and not to the right of x.

  • Please type it as
Sit <math>y ^. ^π</math> fluxio ...
... æquationes <math>A y ^. ^m ^π +
B y ^. ^m-1 ^π + C y ^. ^m-2 ^π + &c. = 0, & ... </math>
